Separate emotion from reason, personality from principle and pretence from sincere articulation of considered opinion. Otherwise, contentious issues under discussion get lost in the din of a raucous debate. For society to move forward rational focus on problematic issues is the prime necessity. Otherwise, television debates become exercises in futility from the social standpoint and only go to serve the channel's business interests in terms of gathering rating points.
