WHEN MASS MEDIA IS SOLD TO PROFIT

WHEN MASS MEDIA IS SOLD TO PROFIT

Have our television channels no work save to seek TRP by giving undue coverage to every inconsequential movement of our leaders? Has the nation now been reduced to a population of a handful? How about covering the plight of the people in far greater a quantum? Are they not the masters of the nation after all? Is not democracy all about them? Was not human society built on the original principles of collective living and equality which later evolved into representative rulership, hereditary monarchy et all? Did not humanity bleed by the millions for millenia to wrest back democratic rights from the perverted privileged who had reduced vast masses of mankind to the status of the slave? And must be now allow the return to this feudal culture where dynasty holds sway and personality rules the people feigning representation?

Yes, representation indeed it is but why such spotlight on the leader for every inconsequential move of his? Why must television channels cover day in and day out every insignificant detail of the leader's whereabouts with such a massive spotlight on him? Is it politically motivated, aimed to systematically create the personality cult for future electoral gains? Or is it simply commercially governed a move, an imperative in the communication market where survival is difficult beyond such participation in decadent coverage? Surely, gaining a sizeable TRP cannot be the sole principle guiding television coverage. The masses deserve a better deal from them than that. After all, it is they who through viewership keep the TRP of the channels up. Media houses have a responsibility towards the nation in unbiased truth-telling. This is the dharma of mass communication and in this they are sadly failing.
