WHERE SEMANTICS STEAL THE SHOW AS SUFFERANCE CONTINUES UNABATED
'Jai Shree Ram' is a greeting. True. Surely, Tabrez Ansari who was lynched in Jharkhand, even as he was forced to greet thus, would agree.
Where human lives count less than such inconsequential chants even in the guise of a greeting, society has plummeted indeed to its nadir and religion in the hands of charlatans and hooligans been reduced to roguish culture.
The ghastly, gory phenomenon cuts across all cultural borders and integrates humanity once more in brutal exhibition of hateful violence. Where greeting of a particular kind, be it 'Jai Shree Ram' and 'Jai Hanuman' as in the case of lynched Ansari of Jharkhand, or 'Allah-hu-Akbar' as in the case of countless conversions of innocent Hindus to Islam in Pakistan, Bangladesh and, why, even here in India, the matter assumes more serious proportions and cannot be cast away as so much semantics. Such insensitivity in dealing with the larger issues involved in a series of incidents, such apathy towards the deeper implications of the corrosive causes that sure will lead to disastrous future consequences, is the bane of a culture in its transitional rot. For, following the Hegelian dialectics in a variant way, perhaps, out of this antithesis will arise the future synthesis, and these are the martyrs being claimed for such evolutionary ascent.
Returning to the contentious issue in Jharkhand, this brutal enforcement of the greetings 'Jai Shree Ram' and 'Jai Hanuman' --- and one wonders how greetings may be forced thus --- even as merciless thrashing continued that culminated in the death of Ansari, can only fracture the polity further and drive fissures deep into our national psyche which will have irreparable consequences.
It is time that sane individuals, men of learning and light, of reason and renunciation, come to the fore to raise their voices in their bid to protect the weak of all ethnic, cultural, racial and religious denominations for the rightful furtherance of human evolution in every part of the world, no less in India that has given birth to the most civilised of spiritual civilisations.
