WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA ... 16
--------------------------------------------------
COMPETITION FOR THE MANDATE AND CONSEQUENT CONCESSIONS

As political parties vie with each other for the people's mandate, pressure builds up on them to appease the electorate. The result is that they are announcing appeasement allowances for the people to somehow bribe them into voting for them.

But will this ploy work? Will the people relent? It seems that the days of politicians playing with the fortunes of the people are over and it is the people who have now begun to play with the fortunes of the politicians. They have been duped long enough but, in so suffering, they have seen through the psychology of the power-hungry politicians and have now started pulling the pressure-strings whereby the political parties are being forced to offer them all sorts of concessions and allowances. In this altered scenario, however, popular sovereignty is being increasingly evident and the political bosses are so losing ground that soon they will be completely at the mercy of the masses.

Lest concessions in corruption gain the ascendancy in an increasingly decadent polity, it is necessary to build the character of both the citizens and their leaders for the optimal growth of future civilisation where integrity rules intent and not self-interest and greed.
