A month before his death Ramakrishna blessed Narendranath with nirvikalpa samadhi, the superconscious state of non-dual being.
A few days later he called Narendra to his bedside and transmitted his spiritual power to him. In effect, Ramakrishna's spiritual self entered Narendra's being in the form of a subtle current that penetrated his system to its deepest and took possession of it, as it were, not quite akin to the demonic possession of personality but an entirely different divine possession of an elevated order. The Master assured his young eagle that he would do great deeds in the world with the help of the power thus entrusted to him.
Shortly before his passage from this world Ramakrishna dispelled the last lingering doubts that assailed the mind of Narendranath about his Master's divinity by declaring himself unequivocally to be the incarnation of Rama and Krishna. And then, within a few days he was gone.
Ramakrishna entered mahasamadhi after midnight on August 16, 1886.
