A few days later Narendranath visited Dakshineshwar alone on foot. The path seemed interminable as he lost track en route and after much detour reached his destination. He found Ramakrishna seated alone in his room. As they settled into conversation, something totally unexpected happened. All of a sudden and without any warning the Paramahamsa touched him. The magic touch sent an electric shock through Narendra's consciousness and with eyes open he saw his surroundings fast disappear into a vast void. When his own personality was about to get engulfed in this yawning chasm and it seemed that death was at hand, he cried out in desperation and the strange old man restored him to normalcy with another magic touch of his. Utterly baffled and shaken with this experience, Narendranath returned home that day.
