BURABAZAR BURNS YET AGAIN --- FIRE AT BAGREE MARKET

BURABAZAR BURNS YET AGAIN --- FIRE AT BAGREE MARKET

Bagree Market burns and my heart burns with it, for the loss is ours in money, materials and the abysmal failure to cater to civic needs. We only hope human loss may be avoided.

When the fire has been raging for nearly 24 hours and the Fire Brigade cannot assure that it can, for sure, douse it forthwith, is it not advisable that the military be called in to tackle this dangerous situation? Why is the Army not being asked to take control of it when they have far better personnel trained for far more dangerous jobs than has yet obtained here? Is it not an emergency of such a magnitude that calls for immediate deployment of the best resources available to the authorities? Are we a provincial state only with limited means of redress of an emergency at our disposal or are we a nation state, too, with vast resources that ought to be deployed at a critical juncture such as this to save the precious lives and property of our citizens? The fire, if not brought under control speedily, might spread disastrously and cause untold damage to life and property. Must we yet awake after the damage has been done to rue our indecision and lament?

The comments of the Ministers and the politicians at this stage of the crisis are pathetic in their lack of empathy and deserve severest public censure. Now is the time to work together and not take political mileage out of the catastrophe. The sheer unconcern of a mass leader who was almost dismissive of the fire as yet another event betrayed an utter lack of sympathy for the affected people and requires us to seriously reflect on the rectitude of the errant politician even as we pray for the safety and security of our sisters and brothers caught in this terrible plight of their lives.
