THE STATE AND THE CITIZEN

THE STATE AND THE CITIZEN

Concentration of too much power in the hands of the state invariably risks individual safety and freedom. It is here that the judiciary, the media and civil society ought to play their respective roles to ensure individual liberty which democracy by definition ensures. However, in totalitarian states these institutions, which are the very organs for the protection of civil liberties, become the handmaids of the state's oppressive culture which, thus, destroys individual freedom and reduces man to a subjugated, subjected status of a slave of sorts. This is the state of much of the world even today in the so-called modern era when technology has rocketed man space-high.
