SWAMI VIVEKANANDA AND HEMCHANDRA GHOSH

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA AND HEMCHANDRA GHOSH

Revolutionary Hemchandra Ghosh met Swami Vivekananda in Dhaka in 1901. He was inflamed by the Swami's words, "A country in bondage can have no religion. Its only religion was to drive off the alien power that was plundering its wealth and resources."

The young Hemchandra was ignited by the fire of the Swami's words. What transpired was a life of utter dedication to the cause of aggressive eviction of the alien enemy that Swamiji had talked of.

Hemchandra was blessed by the Swami. He said an electric current went through his being as Swamiji's palm touched his head by way of blessing him. Hemchandra has vouched that his life was, thus, changed, his perspective and vision altered and his entire being transformed by the Swami's magnetic influence. He gave him, thus, the honorific of the 'cyclonic monk'.

In his old age when well into his nineties, Hemchandra gave an interview to Swami Purnatmananda of the Ramakrishna Mission in which he gave a detailed account of his meeting with Swamiji in Dhaka in 1901.
