This is Bela Dugar, disciple of revolutionary leader Pulin Behari Das, who did the work of emissary for the revolutionaries. Trained in the wielding of the traditional lathi by Pulin Das himself, Bela ran errands for the revolutionaries, risking her life.
I happened to be acquainted with her through my student, Rajarshi Ghosh, whose maternal grandmother she was. A fiery personality even when well past 85, Bela Dugar of short and diminutive stature, exhibited the best traits of the armed revolutionaries who fought for freedom. A Bengali by birth, Bela Ghosh grew up to marry into a Marwari Jain family of feudal repute. Her husband was Saroj Kumar Singh Dugar and their only daughter, Lily Dugar Ghosh, was married to Narottam Ghosh, father to my student, Rajarshi Ghosh, the lone grandchild of Bela Dugar.
An octogenarian of undying patriotic fervour, she received spiritual initiation from Swami Atmasthananda, the 15th President of the Ramakrishna Order.
Bela Dugar's zeal and entirely positive attitude amidst the decaying culture of corruption everywhere, with not a trace of cynicism or sarcastic pessimism, was the illumining feature of her personality. Her reverence for far younger people like me and her readiness to serve them was a moving marvel of her mental make-up. A revolutionary she was, oh, she was, indeed ! Every movement of hers bespoke of an undying fire that burned in her veins and exhibited a leonine strength of character that I have only seen once more in Jogi Dadu who was incarcerated in the Andaman Cellular Jail.
Bela Dugar passed away in 2014 at the age of 92 peacefully at her Sodepur home without any physical suffering. My heart goes out to her for she, out of her greatness that adorned her with a rare humility amidst a lofty dignity, would never receive my prostrations at her feet.
May Thakur-Ma-Swamiji bless her ever and ever and keep her in their fold for eternity !
May the revolutionaries for freedom thus fulfil us with the fragrance of their lives and grace us with the aroma of their memory as we forge our way ahead along the royal avenue they carved for us with the blood and toil of their lives' sacrifice !
Vande Mataram !
