THE GREATEST AFTER SWAMIJI
Sister Nivedita, to my mind, remains the greatest intellectual in India since the last decade of the 19th century, way behind Swamiji, though, but streets ahead of Sri Aurobindo and Tagore despite the seminal attainments of the latter two. This is a personal observation based on the depth of perception that this naturalised Indian exhibited about her chosen country and its culture, her phenomenal insight into the workings of Swamiji's mind barring which the world would, perhaps, never have been able to apprehend in all its varied depth dimensions the prophetic genius that Vivekananda was, and the sheer impossible task of reinventing her own self as an Indian at the rather late age of 32 years as per her Master's injunction, a task herculean which she effectively performed and with what ardour of devotion for her chosen homeland ! And, remember, Swamiji had enjoined upon her to forget the very memory of her past in her austerity of Indianising herself.
