Maya is that which is not, yet seems to be. Like the mirage in a desert being mistaken for water, like a rope being dreaded in the dark as a snake, so is delusive Maya misread as the Real. Why is ought to be so? Well, the very question is unreal and, so, cannot in the real be answered. Simply separate, transcend, go beyond to witness this dream disappear and the Reality unfold before your clarified vision.
