NETAJI AND VITHALBHAI J. PATEL

NETAJI AND VITHALBHAI J. PATEL

Vienna, 1933 : Subhas Chandra Bose by the bedside of the dying Vithalbhai J. Patel who bequeathed Bose a sizeable sum of money to defray the expenses of international propaganda of the struggle for Indian freedom. an inheritance which was challenged in court by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Bose, who was not the defendant in this lawsuit as such, thereupon did not lay claim to the promised sum. Vithalbhai J. Patel passed away at 1 p.m. on 22 October, 1933 in Vienna. His deathbed wish was, thus, disregarded by his brother, Vallabhbhai, unceremoniously.

Such was the contrasting character of the junior Patel from that of his elder sibling, a feature which was later in a more virulent form evident at Tripuri when the Sardar, along with his colleagues in the Congress, stooped nastily low to attribute Bose with the feigning of sickness when the hero was dangerously ill with a bout of bronchopneumonia.
