IN RESPONSE TO A QUESTION AS TO WHETHER I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT NETAJI HAD MARRIED OR NOT

No, I do not believe Netaji had married or had any romantic association or alliance with any one ever in his life. He was a spotlessly pure person, full of the fire of patriotism that left him no time or opportunity and, least of all, any inclination whatsoever to contemplate marriage. He was an ardent lifelong devotee of Ramakrishna-Vivekananda and stayed perfectly continent throughout his life. This marriage controversy cropped up post his disappearance on 18 August, 1945 and this was deliberately designed to tarnish the image of Netaji which had by then assumed godlike proportions in the mind of Indians and threatened to reduce the then stalwarts of the Congress who had assumed power to puny figures in comparison. This was to them a dangerous proposition and had to be countered somehow to maintain their position among the Indian polity. So, up came this dubious design to run down the patriot premier to more fallible mortal proportions. This was a dastardly deed on the part of all those who were party to it and must be denounced in the severest terms even as we renounce this idea for good.

There are many references to the date of Netaji's alleged marriage in book sources published by the Netaji Research Bureau and they are as follows : 1937, 1941 and 1942. Now which of these do we accept? The latest 1942 date has eventually been the consistent date of the alleged marriage that has been stuck to by a section of the extended family of Netaji on his father's side while the remaining section of the family has categorically denied the fact that Netaji ever married. So, it is not true to say that Netaji's extended family are uniformly of the opinion that he had married and that we, therefore, ought to accept it as the gospel truth. Netaji's elder brother, Suresh Chandra Bose, who was a member of the Shah Nawaz Committee, in no uncertain terms rejected the marriage story.

The publications of several books from the Netaji Research Bureau gives several photographs of Emilie Schenkl which are completely different from each other such that anybody can make out that these are different Emilie Schenkls. The question arises as to which is the real Emilie Schenkl or as to how many Emilie Schenkls there were. These are pertinent questions and need resolution in the light of reason and incontrovertible evidence.
