CREDULITY, CREDIBILITY AND THE CONCOURSE ... 1

CREDULITY, CREDIBILITY AND THE CONCOURSE ... 1

Not too many are concerned about the historical contributions of Netaji. Most are intrigued by the mystery surrounding his disappearance. This, of course, is a natural propensity in man that seeks the supernatural or attempts to transcend sensory limitations. And Netaji's disappearance and the legends woven round it over time provide just the setting for such an exercise.

But, on a serious note, it is necessary, nay, an imperative to take an active interest in the disappearance, garner facts about it and use the knowledge so gleaned to bear pressure on the government and compel it to disclose whatever data and documents are in its possession so that a closure of the case in resolved fact-finding is possible. To this end this general enthusiasm, this mass vibrancy is welcome but where it purely is a spine-chiller and the occasion for the suspension of the rational faculties of man and the subscription to fantastic imagination without substantive evidentiary supportive basis, the hollowness of devotion becomes evident. Such mass credulity on the basis of incoherent data linkages then is indicative of a predisposition to acceptance of fiction in much the same way vast numbers of people were gullible enough to gobble up the fabrications foisted on the hero to marginalise and eventually eliminate him from the national discourse. And herein lies the pitfall for the public. Wariness then is the way out.
