RAMAKRISHNA-VIVEKANANDA REVISITED 4/6


All this may sound like Utopian Socialism and may draw the sneers of hard-line Marxists but then, their methods were tried but failed to produce the desired social good owing to a want of character in the men that ran the socialist regimes. Essentially therefore, it boils down to the simple fact that it is men of character alone who can run a system to its fruition and never people devoid of it. Who will build character and that too in a large number of people who in turn will lead and transform society? Can Marxian theory build it even if the correctness of the Marxian principle that theory itself is a force that grips the collective consciousness of the masses be granted? No, it is life that gives birth to life and it is men of supreme spiritual realisation who can quicken the fire of realisation in others whose natural corollary is character. This is not merely an academic assertion but a statement of fact. Throughout the history of mankind this kind of spiritual thought-transmission, this kind of quickening of spiritual consciousness of the disciple by the spiritual preceptor has been evident and has been recorded by historians.

This in Sanskrit is termed the 'Guru-shishya parampara' or the preceptor-pupil succession. Through the unbroken chain of this succession spiritual energy passes from one generation to another and this grace of the Guru helps build character in the disciple. When a nation has a large number of such people who have received the grace of powerful Gurus such as sages and prophets and divine incarnations, then the character of society as a whole is uplifted. Then only morality and ethics find meaning in social life and institutions and systems can be made to run to their desired ends. The system is then well-oiled by the availability of a large number of efficient people, both in skill and in character, and runs smoothly, fulfilling its aspired end. Then a nation rises spiritually and its citizens are happy.
