ARISE INDIA 14 ... HONESTY, INTEGRITY, CHARACTER

Honesty is a virtue that is indeed rare, although, more or less we all wish to indulge in the belief that we are honest indeed. The trouble is that we are apt to overlook the indiscretions we commit in our day-to-day lives which we tend to justify by the philosophy of necessity and the struggle for survival. But in this process of insufficient rationalisation, values get blurred and such noble virtues like honesty, truthfulness and integrity of character suffer a silent, imperceptible, gradual erosion till we wake up to a degradation of personality and self that becomes seemingly irreversible. Hence, we should strictly adhere to scriptural injunctions regarding our code of conduct in life if we are to lead morally sound lives. No compromise here, for any dilution of standard by our own selfish interests will nullify all good that would otherwise have accrued had we adhered to the scriptural code of conduct. Morality is the essential ground of spirituality. A high moral character in due course of time through arduous spiritual disciplines attains to supreme peace. Thus, be it the ascetic life or the commonplace life of the layman, honesty is the integrating factor of character, and character, the basis of all achievement. Our motivations should be pure, our resolutions firm, our actions beneficial and our engagements honest. Truth should be the ideal, freedom the goal, welfare the method and integrity the force. May God bless all who care for all and may God bless them even more who lead self-centred lives that they may come out into the open and stand in the sunshine of purity, love and selflessness! Jai Ramakrishna! Jai Hind!
