Debashis Dutta : •১৯৪২ সালের ২৯শে সেপ্টেম্বর মেদিনীপুরের তমলুক থানার সামনে ৬০০০ মানুষের জমায়েত হয়। গান্ধীজীর 'ভারত ছাড়ো' আন্দোলনে অংশ নিয়ে মাতঙ্গিনী হাজরার নেতৃত্বে এই জনতা তমলুক থানা দখল করে। যদিও মতঙ্গীনির চোখে এবং দুই হাতে মোট তিনটি গুলি লাগে এবং তিনি মারা যান। কিন্তু ইংরেজ পুলিশ কে হারিয়ে ঐ সরকারী বাড়ী দখল নেয় আন্দোলনকারীরা। ঐ আন্দোলনের পর অজয় মুখার্জী,সুশীল ধারা ও সতীশ সামন্তের নেতৃত্বে ১৯৪২ সালের ১৭ই ডিসেম্বর " তাম্রলিপ্ত জাতীয় সরকার" গঠন করা হয় এবং ঐ সরকার ঐ স্বাধীন অঞ্চলের দায়িত্বে থাকেন ১৯৪৪ সাল পর্যন্ত । এটিকে কি প্রথম স্বাধীনতা বলা যায়?
না ২১শে অক্টোবর ১৯৪৩ এ সুভাষ চন্দ্র বসুর নেতৃত্বে গঠিত আজাদ হিন্দ বাহিনীর provincial Government কে প্রথম স্বাধীনতা বলা উচিত?
Sugata Bose : There is merit in both the cases and each deserves its respective recognition but, considering that 11 nations of the world had given diplomatic recognition to the Provisional Government of Free India formed by Netaji, it may be deemed to be of greater historical moment to cite Netaji's government as being representative of India's first true freedom from colonial shackles. Earlier during the First World War in 1915 Mahendra Pratap, Maulana Barkatullah and company had established the first Provisional Government in Kabul, Afghanistan, with the help of the Central Powers. So, all these efforts will have to be taken into consideration including the three-day government of Masterda Surya Sen's Indian Republican Army at Chittagong in 1930. However, Netaji's INA assault being critical to India's eventual winning of freedom, it may be that it is given this recognition ahead of the others. But that is a bit unfair and all these episodes of history must, in my opinion, find due recognition, now that we officially have acceded to celebrating 15 August as the Independence Day since the Transfer of Power in 1947. The debate may rage, though, and it is good if it does so, for only then these forgotten episodes shall relive their lives for us to behold at a distance their original happening.
