Why is it necessary to spoil an address after it has ended by way of less than mediocre thanksgiving which distracts the audience from the lingering impressions left by the eminent speaker (Prof. Kaushik Basu) of superb erudition and eloquence? May not better and more skilled moderators be employed who can keep the music of the masterly address alive by reducing their own impact on it in the interlude?
The perennial problem moderators across the world seem to be having is in the sense of sincerity they exude when introducing speakers by narrating their career graph. The personality of the moderator must be such as to produce minimum deflection from the main course under discussion by the guest speaker. These are traits not easily come by but need professional training and it is here that we need to do better homework before allowing the inevitable moderation of a programme. This is a highly skilled job and requires expertise beyond what we in India generally seem to possess or present in programme.
