I have seen sannyasis (Hindu monks) who preach universal love but despise the so-called impure souls, casting them off with their look of disapproval and displeasure. It is this spiritual pride that is the bane of sannyas. A sannyasi ought to be the refuge of all, not just the pure and the holy but more so of the impure and the degenerate. Where will the fallen go to? Who will they seek refuge in but the blessed ones who in their spiritual destitution as yet remain their only hope? This is something that renounced souls in their wisdom ought to remember. Even they in some past lives in perhaps remotest antiquity were impure souls. But they have advanced to this stage of spiritual enlightenment through the trials and tribulations of countless lives. Must they forget their own evolutionary story? Must they divide humanity into the pure and the impure and only choose to accept the former and reject the latter as so much dispensable material? No, he who accepts all without favour, without fail, without the least degree of aversion is to me the real sannyasi. Others may don the ochre but have as yet to duly qualify in their vocation. It is easy to quote the scripture, pronounce priceless spiritual truths but he indeed is worthy of his vocation thus who lives out totally what he eloquently preaches. May such all-embracing monks fill this blessed earth!

Yours in unconditional selfless love,

Sugata Bose
