THE UNWHOLESOME FLOOD OF DATA ... 1

THE UNWHOLESOME FLOOD OF DATA ... 1

There is too great a flood of data these days that has brought about an unseemly hastening of response to stimuli, an excitability of the mind and an insufficient time-gap between ideas that leaves no room for reflection and arrival at a balanced resolution of thoughts. This undue quickening of the pace of life is wholly unhealthful and unnecessary for it leads to no better output of life than a saner pace produces. Haste causes undue tension in the nerves and stresses up the system which is why meditation is the fad that is increasingly getting hold of the human mind at a superficial level.

The pace of life is governed by one's exposure to technology and the sources of information thereof. Fresh data ever pouring in the mind at a frenetic pace not only unsettle it but also throw the open challenge to the mind to get to tackling them, ordering them and inferring from them whatever conclusions may be drawn. The speed of inflow of data dictates this mental response. Consequently, an ever increasing pace of data inflow builds up in the mind great stresses of information management. The result is loss of mental composure, incorrect decision making and an overall distraught mental state with its concomitant effect on the personality.

The rapid increase of population in the world is further complicating matters. The greater the number of heads in the world, the greater is the load of work that society has to bear to keep going on efficiently. This is leading to increased reliance on technology which is drawing men away from the world of Nature where things are more tranquil. The organisation of society is becoming increasingly complex and is going against the grain of what naturally suits man. This divorce from Nature is unwholesome and is the great progenitor of all subsequent troubles that beset humanity today.
