A DEVELOPING CONVERSATION ON THE DROPPING OF THE ATOMIC BOMBS

A DEVELOPING CONVERSATION ON THE DROPPING OF THE ATOMIC BOMBS

Sugata Bose : Geopolitical considerations prompted the US to use the atomic bomb on Japan. Soviet expansion had to be contained in the East.

Debaprasad Bhattacharya : Or, it was scientists' and politicians' greed to observe the efficacies of the device?

Sugata Bose : That was a secondary derivative of the original function of detonation of the bomb.

Alok N Chattopadhyaya : @ Sugata Bose -- But then war was over. US had shown their muscle power and supremacy to their allies as future warning, foes were then already defeated.

Sugata Bose : @ Alok N Chattopadhyaya -- No, not quite. The old enemy in Soviet Russia had emerged again in the wake of the World War. Stalin had declared war on Japan in the finishing phase of it and this posed a great threat to the US who feared Soviet landing on Japan prior to US occupation. To preempt such an eventuality the atomic bombs were dropped to promptly finish off Japan and the war, prevent Soviet occupation of Japan, thereby curtailing its eastern influence, and also allow US domination there instead.
