PARTITION AND PERDITION

PARTITION AND PERDITION

Ten million were displaced and one million lost their lives due to Partition immediately and countless more have died thereafter and keep dying. Britain cannot escape the retribution of history. And, yet, that would mean more death, greater destruction to humanity, for even the perpetrators of colonial crime were human beings despite their stated savagery in action and it will be a loss to humanity if innocents die at a distance from those dastardly days. Forgiveness, reconciliation must be the way ahead but will Nature forgive? Will history forget the injustices meted out to innocents by the millions? Can the Wheel of Karma be stopped midway to avert the dreadful consequences of dastardly deeds done? Perhaps not. In that case the ceaseless cycle of violence and counter-violence will continue and peace will remain a distant dream, ever approximating in a great man with a message for mankind and ever receding in his mission remaining unfulfilled.

The pendulum swings from end to end, the wave rises and falls in endless cycles, civilisation undulates ceaselessly and man inches ahead snail-like towards his latent divinity. Who knows how the resolutions of karma will be in the final analysis, how nations will meet to coalesce into an integrated order of humanity, how future man will get past his past and emerge in the sunshine of spiritual light and freedom that transcends national boundaries and material bounds? But we may only move forward for that is the one way left to us to resolve differences and evolve into a single human family where mutual conflict will be no more and the higher pursuits of science and spirituality will consume human attention.
