Hindustani classical music is not just a combination of harmonic notes but is the expression of the divine in melodic terms. The essence of the raga, its spirit must manifest in a slow unravelling, a gradual disclosure that will raise the singer to a level sublime and thrill the audience by lifting it to an ethereal realm. No wonder that few qualify to be termed genuine exponents of the art even as a plethora of performers pretend to be artistes by virtue of a grand display of vocal gymnastics which is far removed from what may be termed true music. This is an art exquisite and the artiste is rare who can attain to the height and the depth of 'sadhana' (austere practice that leads to eventual excellence) that crowns him/her with the light and the life of the notes which in isolation merely delude the pretentious performer but which in harmonic bond unbroken grace the sincere explorer of its bottomless bed with the perfection that is termed 'sursiddhi'.
