Godliness and worldliness --- these are the two forces combating for supremacy ever since man has had a decent consciousness to decipher the difference between the two. Thus the pendulum swings from end to end and civilisation alternates between materialism and spiritualism in an unending cycle of cultural ascent and descent tracing out a sinusoidal waveform on the sands of time.
