VILAYAT KHAN
Ustad Vilayat Khan, to my mind, had a finer natural musical sense and a more refined aesthetic sense at that than almost any other sitarist of his generation. The romance in his renditions is simply delightful and carries the mind to a sublimity of human passion, not so divine as that induced in the listener by Annapurna Devi or Ustad Ali Akbar Khan but an intensely human romantic mood that generates in one the bliss of love, faltering and fragile, passionate and pure, sublime, yet full of fragrant earthly flavour. A child prodigy, Karn Singh, alias Vilayat Khan, was indeed Aftab-e-Sitar.
