At Akbar's orders 30,000 innocent civilians of Chittor were slain after hostilities had stopped and the Mughals had already won a significant victory in February, 1568. The old, the infirm, women and children, none were spared. Houses were set on fire and the capital city, flourishing a few days earlier, was reduced to a ghost city. Akbar was teaching the population the lesson for being patriotic and loyal to their sovereign, Rana Udai Singh II.
