Shankaracharya broke through the citadels of decadent Buddhism and reaffirmed the ancient glory of the Vedas. Invincible in argument, he tore into Buddhist nihilism and established the supremacy of the Upanishads, propunding in the process his celebrated Advaita Mayavaad (the philosophy of non-dualism and the concept of Maya) which struck the death-knell of degenerate Buddhism of the day. Thus, the victorious wheels of the chariot of the dharma began to roll again but there were dark clouds of conquest brewing on the western horizon. The Semitic religions, Christianity and Islam, both perversely proselytising, were spreading their tentacles beyond the borders of the Middle East.
