আজ শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণের ১৮৩ তম জন্মতিথি ও ১৮২ তম জন্মবার্ষিকী | জগৎজুড়ে তাই সমারোহ | ১৮৩৬ সালের এই দিনটিতে তাঁর জন্ম, অর্থাৎ, পার্থিব আবির্ভাব | কিন্তু কে ছিলেন এই শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ স্বামিজী যাঁকে অবতারবরিষ্ঠ আখ্যা দিয়েছেন ?

যখনই ধর্মের গ্লানি দেখা দেয়, এই ভারতভূমির ঐতিহ্য যে শ্রীভগবান নরকায় ধারণ করেন ধর্মরক্ষার্থে | অষ্টাদশ ও ঊনবিংশ শতাব্দীতে সনাতন ধর্ম বিপর্যস্ত হয়ে পড়ে পুণ্যভূমি ভারতবর্ষে পাশচাত্য জড়বাদের প্রাদুর্ভাবের দ্বারা একদিকে আর একদিকে ইউরোপীও খৃষ্ঠধর্মের অপপ্রচারের দ্বারা | ভারত তখন জীবন্মৃত, পরাধীন | সহস্র বৎসরের ইসলামীয় শৃঙ্খলের দ্বারা সনাতন ঐতিহ্য যার পর নাই ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত এমত অবস্হায় ইংরেজ, ফরাসি, পোর্তুগীজ, ওলন্দাজ ও ডেইনিষ, এই সকল ইউরোপীয় জাতিগুলি ভারতবর্ষে তাঁদের উপনিবেশ গঠন করে বসল | ফলে সহস্র বৎসরের কুন্ঠীত সনাতন সংষ্কৃতির বড়ই দু্র্দিন উপস্হিত হয়েছিল | ভারত যখন এমনই মূর্ছিতপ্রায় এমত চরমলগ্নে শ্রীভগবান তাঁর প্রিয় ধর্মক্ষেত্রটির রক্ষাকল্পে পুনর্বার অবতীর্ন হলেন |

ইংরেজের আধিপত্যে সনাতন সংস্কৃতি তখন বিপন্ন | মুসলমান নৃপিদের বলক্রীয়ায় অগণিত হিন্দু তখন ইসলাম ধর্মে ধর্মান্তরিত | এর ওপর খ্রীষ্ঠধর্মের দৌরাত্ম ও বৈদেশিক ভাবধারা, ভাষা, সংস্কৃতি ও শাসনের দ্বারা ভারত পর্যুদস্ত | জাতির সনাতন ধারাটি এই সকল সংঘাতের দ্বারা ক্লিষ্ট ও মুমূর্ষুপ্রায় | ভারতের সঙ্কট সমস্ত মানবকুলের সঙ্কট | তাই শুধু ভারতের নয়, সমগ্র মানবজাতির রক্ষাকল্পে শ্রীভগবানের অবতরণ ঘটল পুণ্যক্ষেত্র ভারতবর্ষের এক অখ্যাত গ্রামে এক অতিশয় সদ্ব্রাহ্মণকুলে | কামারপুকুরের ক্ষদিরাম চট্যোপাধ্যায় ও চন্দ্রমণি দেবীর ঘর আলো করে আবির্ভুত হলেন যুগ-ঈশ্বর, গদাধর চট্যোপাধ্যায়, পরবর্তিকালে যিনি রামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংসরূপে আধ্যাত্মিক জগতের এক অত্যুজ্জ্বল জ্যোতিষ্কে পরিণত হয়েছিলেন |

Today is the 183rd birthday and 182nd birth anniversary of Sri Ramakrishna. The world is celebrating it thus. In 1836 on this day he was born, that is, his terrestrial advent took place. But who was this Sri Ramakrishna who Swami Vivekananda has addressed as the greatest of all the divine incarnations to have sported on this earthly plane?

Whenever there is a decline in virtue, it has been the Indian experience that God incarnates Himself to preserve righteousness. The eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries witnessed the weakening of the ancient spiritual tradition of India owing to the influx of western materialism on one side and the aggressive and nefarious proselytisation of European Christianity on the other. India then was lifeless and dependent. A thousand years of Islamic oppression had injured the life and flow of the ancient spiritual tradition of India and it was at this critical juncture of extreme national debility that the European powers of England, France, Portugal, Holland and Denmark made India their colonies. As a result the thwarted spiritual culture of the Hindus faced a terrible crisis. When India was thus in the fit of a faint, at that moment of colossal cultural crisis, God incarnated once again to save the land of righteousness from destruction.

The ancient culture of India was then in great distress owing to the unwholesome predominance of the British in India. Already over centuries countless Hindus had been converted by force to Islam by the Mohammedan rulers in India. To top it all now there was the malefic role being played by the Christian missionaries and the nefarious influence of foreign ideas, language, culture and rule which incapacitated India. The eternal flow of the national spiritual culture was much molested by these conflicting forces and India lay a vast prostrate form, debilitated and devitalised. A crisis in the Indian civilisation is by depth-connection a crisis in world civilisation, for India embodies the eternal verities of life and its civilisation is built on the universal principles that govern universal life. In accordance with it, not merely for the sake of saving India but for saving the entire world from destruction, God incarnated Himself in an unheralded village in Holy India in the family of a pious Brahman. Lighting up the abode of Kshudiram Chattopadhyay and Chandramani Devi of Kamarpukur village was born the divine incarnation of the age, Gadadhar Chattopadhyay, who would in future years as Ramakrishna Paramahamsa grow up to be a stellar being of the spiritual firmament.
