যিনি আসনে আরূঢ়, তাঁর আগমনে ধরিত্রী পবিত্র হয়েছে | কিন্তু তিনি আসনে স্হিত নন শুধু | তাঁর করুণাধারা সেবাযজ্ঞের বিচিত্র কর্মের মধ্য দিয়ে আজ বহুধা প্রবাহিত, বহুল প্রকাশিত | এই যুগচক্রই ধর্মচক্র | এর সঞ্চালিকা মা স্বয়ং | বহুজনহিতায়, বহুজনসুখায় এই জীবকল্যাণকর্ম সূচিত হয়েছে ঠাকুরের আদেশে, মায়ের শক্তিতে, স্বামিজীর দ্বারা | এ যুগের যোগ এই 'সেবাযোগ' | যুগধর্মসংস্হাপন হবে সেবা দ্বারা | ধর্মগ্লানি দূর হবে এই সেবা দ্বারা | নূতন যুগের স্হাপনা হবে সেবা দ্বারা |

একদিন বৈষ্ণবব্যাখ্যানের সময় দক্ষিণেশ্বরে ঠাকুর বলে উঠলেন, "জীবে দয়া ? তুই কীটানুকীট, তুই জীবে দয়া করার কে ? না, না, জীবে দয়া নয়, শিবজ্ঞানে জীবসেবা |" যুবক নরেন্দ্রনাথ বিদ্যুৎস্পৃষ্ট হন এই কথা শুনে ও বলে ওঠেন, "আজ যা শুনলাম, প্রভু যদি দিন দেন তো একথা একদিন সারা পৃথিবীতে ছড়িয়ে দেব |" নরেন্দ্রনাথ তাঁর বাক্য রক্ষা করেছিলেন | ১৮৯৩ সালের ১১ সেপ্টেম্বরের গোধূলিলগ্নের মাহেন্দ্রক্ষণে শিকাগো বিশ্বধর্মমহাসভায় তাঁর শ্রীগুরুর বাণী তাঁর মুখনিঃসৃত হয়েছিল শ্বাশত ভারতের ঔপনিষদিক বাণীরূপে | এরপর ১৯ সেপ্টেম্বরের "হিন্দুধর্ম" শীর্ষক বক্তৃতায় আরো পরিষ্ফুট হয়ে ওঠে বেদান্তের বিশ্বভ্রাতৃত্ববোধ যার দার্শণিক সৌধ দন্ডায়মান আত্মার একত্বানুভূতির মধ্যে | অখ্যাত এক ভারতীয় সন্ন্যাসী হয়ে উঠলেন বিশ্ববরেণ্য বিবেকানন্দ যাঁর দর্শনমাত্র পাওয়ার জন্য শিকাগো সহরে প্রেক্ষাগৃহের বাইরে লোকে লোকারণ্য হয়ে যেত |

এইভাবে স্বামী বিবেকানন্দ সনাতনধর্মের পতাকা উত্তোলন করলেন পাশচাত্যপ্রদেশে | তিনি নিজেই বললেন, "বুদ্ধের যেমন ছিল প্রাচ্যের প্রতি এক বাণী, আমারও তেমনই রয়েছে পাশ্চাত্যের প্রতি এক বাণী |" এই বাণীরূপ বিবেকানন্দ কিভাবে গুরুভ্রাতৃসহযোগে বিচিত্র সেবারূপ কর্মযজ্ঞের অনুষ্ঠান করে গেলেন, তা ক্রমশঃ প্রকাশ্য | আসুন, আমরাও এই সেবাযজ্ঞে ব্রতী হই |

'Thy servant, O Lord, through life after life'

He who is seated enthroned, by his advent the world has been purified. But he is not merely static in his seat. His mercy flows in diverse streams of welfare activity in the worshipful spirit of service for all. This Wheel of the Age is the Wheel of Dharma. The mover of this wheel is Mother herself. For the good of the many, for the happiness of the many, this welfare work has been initiated by the commandment of Sri Ramakrishna, by the power of the Mother and by the labour of love of Swami Vivekananda. The yoga of this Age is this 'Seva Yoga' (the Yoga of Service). The spiritual and moral code for the Age will be set up by this worshipful service. The decline in human values will be arrested and eradicated by this service. The New Age will be established by this institution of service.

One day while enunciating the principle duties of a proper Vaishnava, Sri Ramakrishna exclaimed, "Mercy on man? You who are no better than an insignificant insect, who are you to show mercy on living beings? No, no, not mercy but service to sentience beholding the Lord in all." The young Narendranath was lightning-struck by these words and uttered, "What I have heard today, if the Lord grants me the days, I will throw this message broadcast over the entire world." Narendranath did keep his words. On 11 September, 1893, at the vesper hour Vivekananda stood on the podium of the Chicago World Parliament of Religions to deliver the message of his Master in the symphonic language of eternal India, the verses of the Upanishads, now rendered in a modern diction. Thereafter, on 19 September, in his 'Paper on Hinduism' Vivekananda spelt out the cardinal, features of the Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism) wherein he established the principle of universal brotherhood on the philosophical foundation of the oneness of spiritual existence in the immediate experience of the Atman. This unknown monk in a meteoric rise became the world-renowned Swami Vivekananda to merely get a sight of whom the Chicago streets adjoining the halls where the Swami delivered his lectures used to be jam-packed with the thronging of a multitude.

In this way Swami Vivekananda fluttered the flag of the Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism) in the western world. He himself said, "Like the Buddha had a message for the East, I have a message for the West." How this incarnate voice of the Vedanta, Vivekananda, in alliance with his brother disciples, initiated diverse currents of worshipful service, will be the subject matter of future deliberations. Come ye all, let us as well offer our own oblations to this massive sacrificial fire of service.
