MUST MUSIC DIE?

MUST MUSIC DIE?

Most of the classical musicians are mere pretenders to performance with the aged eminent ones dishing out unmusical nonsense, yet, unwilling to vacate place for newcomers to fill up while themselves going behind the curtains to train these budding artistes. No wonder the standard of classical music is declining by the day and fresh talent is scarce coming through owing to (a) lack of training by master musicians who are busy giving sub-standard performances themselves for their day is gone (b) lack of sustained effort, even Ekalavya-type, for attaining excellence (c) lack of opportunity at the right moment to make the break on the big stage and (d) the greed for instant fame and money overruling musical considerations at a time when learning from the Guru is not yet complete. It is important that a rectified stance related to this insufficiency of preparation alters the state of things and brings about a renaissance in the rendition of classical music in our country. Else, despite the pretensions of the novice and the maestro, classical music will die. Ought we to allow it to be so?
