ARE COMPARISONS ODIOUS IN CRICKET OR OTHERWISE? ... 1

Comparisons are odious. This is the age-old adage. And rightly so when comparisons are made between incomparable elements with no common denominator for the relative estimation to stand on, no fundamental feature of commonality or qualitative sameness whereby the quantitative differences may be measured in adequate terms without falling into crude errors of judgement or fallacious miscalculations. Yet, despite such wise cautioning or repeated remonstrance, people keep comparing personalities of repute, geniuses through the ages and men who have held centre-stage in life and influenced vast sections of humanity. Witnessing this propensity in the average person to compare constantly, I am led to the conclusion that making comparisons is natural to man and is an inescapable feature of the way he gauges things, reflects on them and comes to a definitive understanding of the relative values of things in general. I have, thus, decided to embark on an intellectual voyage in my bid to understand the genesis and flow of the comparison mode of human thinking.
