THE FORGOTTEN APOSTLE OF SRI RAMAKRISHNA

THE FORGOTTEN APOSTLE OF SRI RAMAKRISHNA

What a shame it is that Swami Nirmalananda who is a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna is no more recognised as such! Awake! Awake! Awake to the truth and redress this injustice of history, this distortion of historical fact and this gross blasphemy that can in no way be condoned!

If you are men enough, take up cudgels for the cause. Else, do not profess yourselves to be devotees of Sri Ramakrishna who was the very embodiment of Truth and would not have sided with your cowardly conniving with untruth of the most heinous order.

Acrimonious court cases notwithstanding, truth must be upheld. Even in the law court a witness has to swear by truth before he is allowed to testify. Thus, no amount of rationalisation will suffice to justify the sidelining of Swami Nirmalananda from the narrative of the Order where not one mention do we hear in any lecture by any speaker about the life and contributions of this dynamic brother disciple of Swami Vivekananda.

In the book 'God Lived With Them' by Swami Chetanananda Swami Nirmalananda is the notable absentee from the list of direct monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. There the lives of sixteen direct disciples have been chronicled and the seventeenth one, Swami Niramalananda, has been conveniently left out. This is a shame as it not only falsifies history through suppression of fact but also does the Ramakrishna Movement enormous harm in failing to project before the world at large such a dynamic monk of the Order about whose abilities no less a personality than Swami Vivekananda himself had gone effusive in praise. Devotees are, thus, deprived of the knowledge of this superlative monastic who had lit up southern India with the message of the neo-Vedanta and established a string of Ramakrishna ashramas in Kerala.

Even the Bengali book 'Sri Sri Ramakrishna Bhaktamalika' by Swami Gambhirananda ignores Swami Nirmalananda from its list of the direct monastic disciples of the Master and, accordingly, does not chronicle his life.

Such deliberate denial of the rightful status to a direct monastic disciple of the Avatar of the Age will in the long run cause irreparable damage to the organisation's credibility as the authentic source of information on the Master and his spiritual entourage. In all fairness, thus, Swami Nirmalananda ought to be immediately reinstated as the seventeenth direct monastic disciple of the Master and accorded his rightful place alongside his sixteen other brother disciples. If the organisation fails to do so, it will be the sufferer for it for truth will always prevail in the end to organisational shame in this respect. Hope better sense prevails and this senseless travesty of truth becomes a thing of the past. All my efforts and prayers are to that end.

Satyameva Jayate! Jai Thakur! Jai Ma! Jai Swamiji!
