WORK AND KNOWLEDGE

Work precedes knowledge or is it the other way round? In absolute knowledge there is no trace of work though. Work and knowledge --- the twain are wedded together by the locks of primeval ignorance that eclipses our divine inheritance. And when the sun rises, this union of incompatibles is broken, the unholy wedlock sundered as spiritual effulgence makes realisation supreme, rejecting the mass of work that phenomenal life is as a shadow that dissolves into nothingness before the radiance of the rising sun. Work falls off, the attributes evaporate and the absolute stands rock-solid as the base of the hanging garden of this universe. There existence is, there consciousness is, and there eternity is, singular, alone, self-fulfilled, self-brooding till the faintest of distinctions arises through karmic links calling forth across the desert sand of Maya. Vast stretches of darkness are traversed in a twinkling of an eye as the liberated soul returns to accomplish welfare work for the sake of the fallen ones who have lost their way in the wilderness of life. Again work proceeds but this time it is not from the confines of the desirous soul but from the freedom of the gracious one who works out his divine act of deliverance of aspirant souls form the shackles of Maya. Now work he performs but entirely free of attachment and such detached work can claim no hold on him who has himself renounced his claim on its fruits. The causal chain of karma having been sundered, work now flows freely by mutual adjustment of the gunas (attributes) of Nature to a higher end as the sage witnesses the conversion of energy from the recipient of grace to the cremation of the seeds of karma in his phenomenal luminous self releasing him eventually unto 'videha mukti' (liberation unto formlessness). Then the curtain drops for good and the divine drama is over for the luminous one. Who will say now what remains?
