BHARAT RATNA WITH A COMMERCIAL TILT

A Bharat Ratna of unbelievable riches yet chooses to earn from television advertisement, advertising for mutual funds. Shame ! Such cricketers must never be deemed national icons and role models for children as is falsely claimed, citing their names, by interested parties. Such commercial characters must never be honoured with Bharat Ratna thus even if they be of seminal achievement in their respective fields. The title bears a dignity which must never he so lowered as also by its conferment on crafty politicians of inconsequential past in terms of positive contribution to the national life.

Bharat Ratna most only be conferred on gems of the nation who have accredited themselves in every sense, not merely in terms of excellence in their fields of endeavour but in character-terms as well. Accumulators of personal wealth in a country of hundreds of millions of people suffering grinding poverty must never be deemed worthy of receiving the highest national honour.

This is India, the land of sages and saints, gods and goddesses, incarnations and itinerant monks. Here renunciation and service are the twin ideals which we have been exhorted by Swamiji to hold onto in order to set the course of national life straight, in line with its age-old trajectory flowing down the national slope like the Ganga for millenia. Here we cannot lower guard and uphold adherents of commercial culture as exemplars of our highest tradition which ought to be the underlying basis for determining as to who is worthy and who is not so of receiving the Bharat Ratna. Else, this country will have sold its morals to mindless mercenaries of the modern age. We must be careful.

Bharat Ratna lost its meaning and charm for me the day I witnessed its conferment on beneficiaries of the mighty Mammon in its most malignant modern manner. Crass commercial culture like cancer runs through society and even a Bharat Ratna helps it on towards its boundary line where ignorant, affected people cheer him on to their own impending doom in an exploitative world of capital of which the said Bharat Ratna and his colleagues are mighty well a part of. God bless Bharatvarsha and God bless her Bharat Ratnas !
