VIOLENCE, WAR AND DHARMA

VIOLENCE, WAR AND DHARMA

Violence, violence, violence -- I hate violence. And, yet, hatred itself is violence as well but I cannot love it. So, resist without hatred -- this is the duty of the householder. And it is unto this calling of the enlightened sense of duty that Krishna impregnated Arjun's soul with the message of the Geeta that he might vanquish the forces of evil arrayed against the forces of good by conducting a righteous war. The righteous war would then be deemed as sacrifice from the perspective of the protectors of dharma (good) and as terrible violence from that of the perpetrators of adharma (evil). The motive impelling and the spirit behind the deed determine the classification of the act and not merely the mode of force used.
