SUNDARAM, THE LOST PRINCIPLE OF AESTHETICS

SUNDARAM, THE LOST PRINCIPLE OF AESTHETICS

Children should be taught neatness in work. This will greatly help improve human efficiency in work in the days to come.

The 'sundaram' principle (principle of beauty) needs emphasis in an aesthetically refined way. It is one of the three cardinal principles of life, the other two being, 'satyam' (truth) and 'Shivam' (welfare). All three need redefining in modern terms and a reapplication in every phase of human living. But the element of beauty in all its sublimity and in all its practical utility needs a special emphasis to avoid a crude degeneration of civilisation on one hand and a coarse degradation in all human activity from its erstwhile refinement on the other.

The old adage 'Old is gold' must not mean anymore that there is a progressive degradation in the quality of goods and services available to us. We must now reverse the trend and limit its meaning to the psychological level in terms of nostalgic reminiscence of the halcyon days of the past and must through our endeavour in excellence bring about such a regeneration of civilisation in every aspect that the past will watch in mute wonder (if such a thing could be) at the progression of its progeny. For all this, the first step must be the redefining of the element of aesthetics and it must begin with the children in their school curriculum.
