Spiritual aspiration cannot co-exist with delusive desires of the mind. It is pure and unsullied love that attracts the soul to the Divine within and makes it introspective. External conditions often turn inimical to this progression as the forces of Nature in alliance oppose the soul's great escape.
Nature functions in dual mode, as Vidya Shakti (releasing Power) and Avidya Shakti (binding Power). The bound soul is enchanted by Avidya while the soul that has launched the struggle for freedom has in effect declared war on Maya. It is this soul that Maya now turns to and declares a counter-war on.
All things are rosy and fine in terms of earthly necessities for the bound soul that has surrendered to Maya's designs of keeping the terrestrial play on but the soul that is aspirant for freedom, Maya detects it as veritable danger to the perpetuation of Her empire and now attempts to ambush it in every way. If enticement will not work, She obstructs its very survival in the physical plane by ruining the source of its rudimentary requirements in life. Alternate enticement and destruction of livelihood are the malicious modes made use of by Maya to trap the soul into submission. If it wilts, its earthly suffering is over but his sublime pursuit is at end as well and there emerges the Divine Enchantress in supreme pride at having subjugated insurrection of the revolting soul. But if the soul persists through all its travails, its dark days in earthly requirement loom large in its face while the horizon clears in the ethereal realm revealing luminous patches of the Dark Divine.
