TRIBUTE TO A MAESTRO IN HIS CENTENARY YEAR

TRIBUTE TO A MAESTRO IN HIS CENTENARY YEAR

What a beautiful rendition, melodic, serene, sublime ! The classic style of the Maihar Gharana with the master stamp of Baba Allauddin Khan is evident here with all added individual brilliance of the performer. Pandit Ajoy Sinha Roy's distinctive style with its melodic and rhythmic patterns, the richness of tonal quality with deft and caressing touches that make the notes speak with their individual character, long taans and deep gamaks, all these and so much more mark him out as an outstanding disciple of Baba whose genius was never sufficiently recognised owing to the mediocrity of our music lovers and the callousness of connoisseurs in promoting such a brilliant talent. That the world has lost an outstanding virtuoso and Indian music one of the truest adherents of the Seniya tradition is something that has to be borne now that he is gone. The least we can do now is to salvage whatever is left of it in the personal collections of his students and admirers and present them before the public through this mass medium of the YouTube. My heartiest thanks to Milan Brata Basu for having come forward in this direction and allowing us the privilege to hear the maestro at a distance in time and fittingly in his centenary year. In this regard I must also mention Piyush Kanti Sinha who has done seminal work in this direction with his presentation of some of his recordings of the maestro in his advanced years. Let us now come together to honour this musical genius who was not given his due during his lifetime of singular dedication to music.

Sharmistha Chatterjee : The smooth curves and silky patterns make us feel a deep wide expanse of pure serenity. It stops our wit and transcends it by transmitting the essence of the elements drop by drop evoking sweet , forlone images of unfathomed past, of the rhythms of life, of a vast horizon of yet to be.
