MELODY SUBLIME

MELODY SUBLIME

The most accomplished flautist, melodic, serene, sublime, a disciple totally devoted to his Guru Ma Annapurna Devi, one who carries the purest stream of the Maihar Gharana and has not sold his soul to the copper coin. His extraordinary Guru-bhakti will become the stuff of legend as the years roll on when the story will be told and retold how he stayed like a shadow night and day with near-nonagenarian Guru Ma, serving her tirelessly while severing all social connections, sacrificing public performances and leading a reclusive life in an apartment in Mumbai where his Guru resided, infirm and ailing due to old age. Here the Gaud Sarang rendition exemplifies Haldipur's absorption of the best musical strains of his Guru who in turn was the repository of the rich musical legacy of her father, Baba Allauddin Khan, the vast receptacle of the Seniya Gharana and its last lingering link with its grand past, but for whom the golden Guru-shishya parampara (preceptor-pupil succession sequence) in this gharana would have been lost for good as his Guru Ustad Wazir Khan lost his sons suddenly to the ravages of cholera and had no one to pass on his heritage to, save the thus far deprived Allauddin who used to sit through his Guru's musical lessons outside his room at the door and learn with intent ears whatever he could piece together, crumbs coming from the lessons imparted to the Guru's sons. Nityanand Haldipur absorbed the best elements of this tradition from Ma Annapurna Devi after receiving training earlier from Pannalal Ghosh, Chidanand Nagarkar and Devendra Murdeshwar. The rest is history as a persistent Nityanand eventually was accepted by Annapurna Devi as disciple after a prolonged period of rejection stretching 13 years. Gaud Sarang comes alive here in heavenly terms, compensating all that was lost in that long delay. Now listen to the rendition.
