FOR WEEKS HE WOULD NOT GET OUT!

FOR WEEKS HE WOULD NOT GET OUT!

In 1948-49 he kept our bowlers waiting for his wicket for weeks while keeping on scoring ever a ton a time for five successive test match innings, falling short of the sixth by just ten runs. Everton Weekes, thou didst live up to thy name in true Barbadian style, cutting and pulling free, thou pocket-sized dynamo pulverising bowlers through thy devastating display of disdainful batsmanship, sending hapless fieldsmen scurrying for cover to save their flesh and form or running to recover the pummelled ball racing to the boundary! Such vintage batting the world has scarce seen which prompted such a connoisseur as Sir Don to nominate thee as the best middle-order batsman he had witnessed Down Under, for even there, despite a barrage of bumpers hurled at thee by Lindwall that bordered on bodyline, thou didst leave thy mark in telling fashion, not just on the leather liberated repeatedly at the fence but on the minds of men mesmerised by thy awesome batting prowess, even if evident not in fullest flow but in seed form of surpassing strength and beauty. Small compliment for sure! Live on ever Everton Weekes in our memory as yet captivated by the images of your tons in free-flowing fashion!
