DEPTH NEEDED, NOT DELUSIVE DELIGHT

DEPTH NEEDED, NOT DELUSIVE DELIGHT

We need deeper souls in India. Too much of frothy stuff is filling the brains of too many people, making their responses ultralight and their overall personalities too full of levity. A certain amount of seriousness of attitude and approach is necessary that would make national life deeper. One cannot entertain smiling, even laughing, faces discussing grave national losses, civilisational wounds as if they were matter-of-fact happenings that deserve no better dealing, no deeper demeanour.

The average personality density of the national population has diminished and national concentration reduced to nought such that at every instance the surfing mind further leaps into the air and can never quite manage to dive to any depth of significant findings. This is the sad spectacle despite mass pretension to the contrary. That martial spirit which seeks sacrifice above self, that discipline of the mind that refuses to yield an inch to the enemy, holds guard over post heavy, that steadfastness of nature, resoluteness of character---all these are missing in a polity invaded by crass commercial consumerism that places self above sacrifice, popularity and profit above self-effacement and service, and indisciplined individualism above collective well-being. It is a people gone wrong in an age that has been infected with crude commercial culture and the deathly virus of self-projection. Spirituality is at its ebb and the high tide of indiscriminate materialism is ruining the run of national evolution.

Photo: Revolutionary Hemchandra Ghosh who lived an exemplary life till 95 that was in radical contrast to the current decadence and in perfect alignment with what may be termed classical sacrificial living for the nation. Let not our leaders pretend to be a semblance of what this doyen of Bengal revolutionaries was and let not any such of the pretentious public pose to be bearing titular reverence for such a real sage as opposed to the singing-dancing sanyasis of scantier spiritual stuff.
