AN OPEN LETTER TO MOR IGNATIUS APHREM II OF THE SYRIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

Dear Holy Father,

      Brainwashing children from birth is not the right prescription for the progress of humanity even in the spiritual line. Indoctrination from infancy retards the capacity for rational thinking and fills the mind with vague superstitions that for ages have masqueraded as spiritual learning. The mind loaded with such archaic conceptions about the world and life, about truth and reality, can scarce advance effectively to the discovery of truth in real. Children must be allowed to grow free of these traditional trappings of thought and given room for free thinking whereby they will be instruments fit enough for self-discovery or the discovery of the Self which in essence they are. Religious indoctrination has had its day. Now let its skeletons not be exhumed to the continued detriment of human society which should now be permitted to see truth as it is by the light undispersed by the prism of puerile and often perverse piety. 🕉
