REMARK OFF THE CUFF ... 5

1. Plant trees or perish as a people. Now is the hour of reckoning. If not now, then never. The moment to be may be still-born.

2. It is nighttime. Where is the sun now? Does it mean it does not exist? So with God, hidden behind the cover of primeval clouds of ignorance.

3. Religious violence has conversion as its root cause. Fanatical faiths will ever impose their version of spirituality and not let others breathe in peace till they have had their way of converting the rest of mankind to their dogmatic creed. Proselytisation based on such shallow perception of the order of things as decreed by some fanatical medieval being on the supposed authority of some archaic absolutist divine agency is tantamount to proliferation of mass hypnotism and is surely the seed of future fanatical violence.

To evade the real issue of rectifying the texts of these fanatical faiths (which at this date from their original enunciation seems impossible and will not be allowed by the powers that be) or altering the allegiance of adherents to such and instead attempting some feeble surface adjustments while the core fanatical principles remain unattended to is to prolong the agony of man suffering the yoke of ignorance imposed upon. Time it is to face up to fact and to stop pretending that all is well with these crude representations of the divine and of the human too.

4. To denigrate Vivekananda may be the fashion of liberals intensely devoted to the flesh and culpable to pecuniary susceptibility when it comes to advancing the cause of fanatical faiths thrust on us through invasion but can in no way diminish the splendour of the soul that Vivekananda was. The leonine Swami remains the iconic figure for all that is best in the Indian tradition and for all that is best in the broader culture of humanity as well. He was the culmination of the spiritual development of the ages and its climactic utterance as well. There was nothing mean or small about the Swami as he represented the best strands of the human endeavour in his celebrated Chicago addresses that became a moment crystallised in time. The East and the West, the past and the present, science and religion, the secular and the sacred, all these diverse elements, contrarily disposed for long, fused in his being into the integrated vision of the Vedanta which he preached across the length and breadth of vast America and Europe before thundering his motherland with the clarion call for freedom. 11 September, 1893 became the contact point in time, the moment of fusion when history took a turnaround and altered course for good. It will take centuries for the real significance of this day to dawn on all those who are inebriated by Maya and in their altered state of understanding take up cudgels against the Swami but for whom the day would have been darker and the night a veritable Erebus on Earth.

5. There is a dense ignorance which hangs over the mind of man which must be removed if illumination is to be.

6. The world hangs on with bated breath to behold the man of power
Who shall arise despite the tide of times and set the course aright.

7. The massive impact of the Swami Vivekananda on the psyche of the West is yet unfolding and will do so for centuries to come.

8. The gracious glance of the Holy Mother can dispel a million-year darkness of the soul in a trice, for She is the light of the universe, the giver of illumination, the resolver of all karma.

9. As a nation we need to be more disciplined in our thinking. Then alone will great change come in our public affairs.

10. We must be wary of the Chinese. Doklam is but the tip of the iceberg which can in time sink our national ship if we are not watchful.
