Preface
-------------
The second volume of 'Nabajuger Mahapurush' written by me was published in 1358 (Bengali calendar) / 1952 (Eng). There I have written a brief biography of Swami Nirmalananda stretching 48 pages. The first part of this biography saw the light of day in the 'Jaishtha' edition of the monthly 'Vishvavani'. About five years later the elaborate biography of this Bengali monastic appended with letters, conversations and lectures has now been published. In point of fact this composition was completed before Swami Nirmalananda's 92nd birthday in the middle of 1954 and was ready to go to print. However, unforeseen circumstances delayed its publication by nearly seven years. For long have I fervently studied the wondrous life of this monastic disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. Earlier I had the good fortune to write detailed biographies of Swamis Ramakrishnananda, Turiyananda and Vijnanananda. I feel blessed to have been able to write this latest biography of Swami Nirmalananda. I had met him many times in Belur Math and touched his feet. There I had the occasion to listen to his inspiring spiritual discourses. When he used to speak on spirituality in English, it used to seem to us like the roar of a lion. This book is an offering unto that hallowed memory.

In 1943 a full-length biography of Swami Nirmalananda was published by his disciples from Niranjan Ashrama of Ottapalam in South Malabar. It is lamentable that the Bengali biography of this immortal saint took such a long time to publish since that day. On the occasion of his centenary efforts must be made in his birthplace Bengal to preserve his memory. Although this Bengali biography has been written following the narrative in the English biography, many new factual elements have been incorporated here. Swami Tripurananda, President of Sri Ramakrishna-Sarada Math, has from the very beginning provided me with encouragement and assistance and eventually has taken upon himself the heavy responsibility of the publication of this book. He has provided me with accounts of Swami Nirmalananda's stay in the kingdom of Chamba and many letters and other biographical elements. I have also received inspiration and guidance from Swami Vishadananda, President of Ottapalam Niranjan Ashrama. In this book alongside the life-story of Swami Nirmalananda the unpublished, neglected, informative history of the worldwide Ramakrishna Movement has also been chronicled. In 1930 a legal case between the Belur Math authorities and Swami Nirmalananda was fought in the Bangalore Judges Court. The memorable testimony that Swami Nirmalananda gave in this case from the witness box has in brief been provided at the beginning of this book. The history of the Ramakrishna Movement will remain incomplete if the account of Swami Nirmalananda's labour of love in the propagation of the Vedanta in southern India and America is not graphically recorded. Above all, Swami Nirmalananda's life itself is one of the best commentaries on the life and message of Sri Ramakrishna. Undoubtedly, it will enrich Bengali literature and the broader Bengali cultural scene.

In the writing of this book young associates like Sri Birendranath Pratihar (B.A., B.T.), Sri Shibaniprasad Maitra (M.A.) and Swami Visvarupananda have helped me in many a way. Had it not been for their sincere cooperation, my broken health and failing eyesight would have proved too much for me to write this book. I, therefore, offer my heartfelt thankfulness to them. Finally, my deep sense of gratitude to Srimat Swami Tripuranandaji who was the never-failing source of encouragement for me and the publisher of this book as well. If this book, a new entrant in the body of Ramakrishna literature, succeeds ever so slightly in propagating the holy life and immortal message of Swami Nirmalananda, apostle of Sri Ramakrishna, my efforts will not have gone in vain.

Yours faithfully,
Swami Jagadiswarananda,

Preface to the second edition
---------------------------------------
By the grace of the Master I received spiritual (mantra) initiation, brahmacharya and sannyasa from Swami Tripurananda.

By the ceaseless efforts of revered Swami Tripurananda the biography of Swami Nirmalananda, the disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, had been published way back. Since then many years have elapsed. The publication of the book had raised quite a stir in civil society as the book revealed hitherto unpublished material about many contentious issues related to the establishment of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission.

Through much travail this second edition of the book has now been published. My sincerest gratitude to all who have contributed to this publication in diverse ways.

It is our hope that by the grace of Sri Ramakrishna this edition of the book will be received as well by readers as its earlier edition.

Publisher's Note :
-----------------------
Revered Swami Nirmalananda (Tulsi Maharaj) was one of the intimate disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. His untiring efforts helped propagate the message of the Master in southern India and brought about significant changes in society there. Nirmalananda Swami also preached in erstwhile Burma (presently, Yangon) and in distant America (USA). But his seminal service in the propagation of his Master's message has remained largely unknown to the common mass of humanity. In 1943 an English biography of Swami Nirmalananda was published through the efforts of his monastic disciples from the Madras Presidency which filled the data void about him to an extent but the absence of a Bengali biography remained a big lacuna in this regard. The people of Bengal were sadly deprived of knowledge about this seminal saint from their very province. The efforts of Swami Jagadiswarananda has at last enabled the publication of the Bengali biography of Swami Nirmalananda. Swami Tripurananda of Sri Ramakrishna-Sarada Math had lived in close proximity with this intimate disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and had visited many places with him. He had helped the author with many an unpublished fact in the composition of this book. The incorporation of such data in this book has justified its being called a biography in the truest sense of the term.

The author, revered Swami Jagadiswarananda, has laboured hard in old age in writing this book. For this we remain in perennial bond of indebtedness to him.

A DEFENCE TO A POST OF MINE IN PURELY TRUTH TERMS

A DEFENCE TO A POST OF MINE IN PURELY TRUTH TERMS

The stated purpose of Islam is to convert all for it is by doctrine the one true religion of the world to which all must submit which is why there is the system of dawat in Islam whereby non-Muslims are invited to convert to it. Whether Hindus have caste system or not should not bother Muslims and they have no reason to thus convert citing such a fanciful rationale for doing so. However, the stated point about the necessity of levelling social differences within the fold of Hinduism is pertinent, although, that should not mean that Muslim organisations will take advantage of it to persuade people to convert to their fold. The very idea of doctrinaire exclusiveness and the compulsion to convert adherents of other religious denominations to their fold as obtains in Islam and Christianity is reprehensible and Hindus have serious issues with it.

One last word. Ghazwa-e-Hind is an Islamic prophecy that does not preach goodwill towards Hindus. In fact, it foretells the future doom of Hindus at the hands of conquering Islamic armies. Islam by way of fundamental doctrine abhors Hinduism as a so-called polytheistic false faith as is rightly evidenced by the preaching of all sincere adherents of the Islamic faith as opposed to liberal pretenders who cherry-pick peaceful passages from the scripture to deflect discussion and delude the public in regard to the real truth.

THE FORGOTTEN APOSTLE OF SRI RAMAKRISHNA

THE FORGOTTEN APOSTLE OF SRI RAMAKRISHNA

What a shame it is that Swami Nirmalananda who is a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna is no more recognised as such! Awake! Awake! Awake to the truth and redress this injustice of history, this distortion of historical fact and this gross blasphemy that can in no way be condoned!

If you are men enough, take up cudgels for the cause. Else, do not profess yourselves to be devotees of Sri Ramakrishna who was the very embodiment of Truth and would not have sided with your cowardly conniving with untruth of the most heinous order.

Acrimonious court cases notwithstanding, truth must be upheld. Even in the law court a witness has to swear by truth before he is allowed to testify. Thus, no amount of rationalisation will suffice to justify the sidelining of Swami Nirmalananda from the narrative of the Order where not one mention do we hear in any lecture by any speaker about the life and contributions of this dynamic brother disciple of Swami Vivekananda.

In the book 'God Lived With Them' by Swami Chetanananda Swami Nirmalananda is the notable absentee from the list of direct monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. There the lives of sixteen direct disciples have been chronicled and the seventeenth one, Swami Niramalananda, has been conveniently left out. This is a shame as it not only falsifies history through suppression of fact but also does the Ramakrishna Movement enormous harm in failing to project before the world at large such a dynamic monk of the Order about whose abilities no less a personality than Swami Vivekananda himself had gone effusive in praise. Devotees are, thus, deprived of the knowledge of this superlative monastic who had lit up southern India with the message of the neo-Vedanta and established a string of Ramakrishna ashramas in Kerala.

Even the Bengali book 'Sri Sri Ramakrishna Bhaktamalika' by Swami Gambhirananda ignores Swami Nirmalananda from its list of the direct monastic disciples of the Master and, accordingly, does not chronicle his life.

Such deliberate denial of the rightful status to a direct monastic disciple of the Avatar of the Age will in the long run cause irreparable damage to the organisation's credibility as the authentic source of information on the Master and his spiritual entourage. In all fairness, thus, Swami Nirmalananda ought to be immediately reinstated as the seventeenth direct monastic disciple of the Master and accorded his rightful place alongside his sixteen other brother disciples. If the organisation fails to do so, it will be the sufferer for it for truth will always prevail in the end to organisational shame in this respect. Hope better sense prevails and this senseless travesty of truth becomes a thing of the past. All my efforts and prayers are to that end.

POESY : A CLASSIC COMPOSITION BY SHARMISTHA CHATTERJEE

A CLASSIC COMPOSITION BY SHARMISTHA CHATTERJEE

As the first streaks of dawn crept,
The precinct of our backyard garden
Was flushed and got readily swept,
My eyes fell on this beautiful form,
Astounded, impulsive, I stood there
Without a fall of eyelid,
And here I share,
The aura, tenor, tone and time,
Poignant, perfect and pristine....
Art thou to be plucked and sacrificed?
Nay, thou art the mother Herself!
Yo-Yo ing, with joy,
Swaying and swinging,
The touch of the soft breeze...
Softer than a Bubble,
Sweeter than the childhood,
Deeper than a memory.

Composed by Sharmistha Chatterjee

AN APPRECIATION OF A CLASSIC COMPOSITION

Ah, what a composition! Poetic perfection itself. What beauty, balance and depth in joy, spontaneous, sublime, yet, so real with not a syllable more or less as the words have flown out like oozing dewdrops from the first fertile heart in springtime's first awakening! Whatever be written now by way of appreciation is turning profane as the perfection of poesy leaves no room for such save to mutely savour the scene spelt out in such sublimity that words and images have fused and diffused to render the worship whole.

When the lines flashed in my path this morn, I was as taken in by them as you were by the rose that lit up your dawn. It was a revelation to me as to your potential as a poetess of singular sympathies. This poem could easily have been passed off as having been composed by a great poet or poetess of the past of the Romantic or the Victorian Period and none could have guessed that it was not so. This clearly shows that great art transcends the boundaries of time and space as here we discover its dewy instance. It is a request that this poem be preserved for posterity to savour as well and that the hour may not merely behold it in rapture. As such this softness in metre must be saved in hard letters as well to freshen its fragrance when memory fades and with a wild rush of summer dreams it will flood the being once again.

On a personal note let me admit that I can scarce even dream of ever composing such a poem perfect, such a composition complete that is replete with all the features of high art, of a symphony in sound that may only happen one fine morn when the soul resonates thus to the thrill of Nature and the words flow out in ecstatic delight in pulsation with the blossoming of this beautiful rose. This poem is perfect, this composition complete even as a single work of art is the whole body of art itself when the divine graces every element of its expression. Most of the compositions that enthral us the first time, decay in their appeal overtime but this one shall not. I say it has beaten time somehow and shall endure in its appeal even as the years roll on and the seasons flush out fresh blossoms to bring back memories of a distant dawn that shall never fade thus. And so will these lines linger as a never-failing source of perennial joy, pure and pristine. Thank you, Sharmistha, for having been the channel for all of us to enter the realm of beauty.

WHEN SOMEONE CLOSE TO THE LORD COMES

WHEN SOMEONE CLOSE TO THE LORD COMES

It was a wonderful session today as two devotees from families very close to the Ramakrishna movement visited me at my residence. I feel blessed today and uplifted by their holy association. These are rare occasions when kindred spirits meet and at such a confluence of souls flows the spiritual Ganga. Hopefully, a movement shall emanate from these meetings when other like souls will also grace such occasions and we may then celebrate Thakur's advent on earth with due devotion.

Form 5.50 p.m. till 10.40 p.m. the conversation carried on with Thakur as the nucleus holding the drift together. Swami Nirmalananda featured prominently, Kiron Chandra Dutta, Brahma Gopal Dutta, Ajay Kumar Basu, Dr. Achutan, Manoj Sivan, Lakshmi Nivas, Ramlal Dada, Swamis Gahanananda, Ranganathananda et al. A wide variety of issues were discussed, those ranging from the early episodes of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission to those of this day. Holy Mother featured prominently in our discussions as did the familial line of Ramlal Dada.

The details are not being divulged here for it will be too lengthy a write-up then but suffice it to say that we threesome formed a formidable company exploding Ramakrishna thought-bombs for the entire evening. The upshot of it all was that there was a tentative agreement that we must make for a spiritual movement of sorts from here on and in this regard I request interested people to contact me as and when we shall notify all where to contact.

We hope to soon meet for the next session and till then shall prepare ourselves for the movement that is in the offing.

Jai Ramakrishna! Jai Ma!
