***********PAST 2000 NOW AND SURGING AHEAD (UNFINISHED)

My dear countrymen and friends across the globe,

Your response thus far has been heartening and you have carried this petition on your shoulders till we are now well past 2000 and surging ahead. Keep up the campaign for it is of utmost moment to the nation's well-being. These neglected heroes who were the architects of our freedom have never been given their due recognition by the Government or by hired historians who have busied themselves in spinning the fine yarn of untruth and burying in the process the grand saga of armed revolution in the ocean bed of oblivion. Thus, generations in post-independent India have grown up hearing the myth that it was Gandhian non-violence that had almost single-handed dealt the deathblow to British imperialism in India and caused it to quit India. But nothing can be farther from the truth. While Gandhi did succeed in mobilising mass support for his passive programmes for freedom, his movements all failed during the tumultuous decade of the 1940s. So ineffective had he become that he could not prevent the Partition of India despite his mass following.

So, why did the British leave India despite having been victors in the Second World War? The Quit India Movement of Gandhi had been long crushed and the Congress had no action programme to speak of in the period 1945-47. Yet, the British left. Why?

The answer lies in Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and his Indian National Army whose assault on the northeastern borders of India and the subsequent trials of its three officers, Colonel Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon, Colonel Prem Kumar Sahgal and Major General Shah Nawaz Khan, in the Red Fort in 1945-46 undermined British authority over its armed forces in India to such an extent that they could no longer be relied on to defend the Raj. The realisation now dawned on the Crown that its time was up and its brightest jewel was about to be lost for good. Circumstances in India were electric with Netaji's popularity in absentia sparking off nationwide revolts in every civil and military department and it was this that forced the colonists to quit the land while a face-saving exit was yet possible.

But the success of Netaji and his INA did not come about all of a sudden with no historical linkages. It had deep historical causes embedded in it, revolutionary motivations of a suppressed people simmering for long, seeking channels of expression whenever the occasion arose but never quite achieving fulfilment in delivering the coup d'e'tat. The idea of armed revolution had been brewing in the minds of the valorous sons and daughters of Mother India ever since the First War of Indian Independence, after initial successes, had been brutally suppressed by a barbarous British regime. The memory of the Revolt remained as a permanent scar on the Indian psyche even as India was totally disarmed by force. The British feared it, too, and would not allow its recurrence at any cost. The conflagration had been extinguished but the embers were glowing still in the hearts and minds of a new generation of young Indians who plotted the downfall of the British Raj.

Swami Vivekananda's arrival on the world scene in the last decade of the nineteenth century set the stage for the ensuing battle of the titans which would decide the course of world history, for India was at the heart-centre of British imperial exploits and aspirations. Vivekananda died in 1902 and the flames of his pyre ignited the revolution in Bengal following its Partition in 1905. Extremist movements were rife along with the Swadeshi and Boycott Movements and, eventually, the cumulative pressure of these, building up unceasingly on the Government, forced it to annul the Partition. This was a big victory for the extremists within the Congress and added fillip to their revolutionary activities, although, Aurobindo Ghosh's withdrawal from active politics to retirement as recluse in Pondicherry came as a severe blow to revolutionary aspirations in Bengal. The capital city of British India was also shifted to New Delhi but this distancing from the Bengal revolutionaries did not protect the Raj from further armed assaults.

Lord Hardinge was bombed by Rash Behari Bose and Basanta Biswas on 23 Dec, 1912. The shifting of capital city from Calcutta to New Delhi did not spare the Viceroy the ire of the revolutionaries. He escaped with injuries but the message of revolution had been sent across the seas to shake up the powers that kept India in bondage. It also quickened revolutionary efforts within the Jugantar led by Bagha Jatin and the Ghadar Party based overseas that now plotted mutiny within the rank and file of the British Indian armed forces.

BHARAT RATNA, SEVENTH UPDATE : BHARAT RATNA --- WILL IT DEMEAN THE TRINITY?

BHARAT RATNA --- WILL IT DEMEAN THE TRINITY?

7 MAY 2018 — Not all are amenable to the idea that the trinity of heroes ought to be awarded the Bharat Ratna for they feel that it will reduce them in public estimation to the level of Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi. I have written copiously my defence against this charge but seemingly to not much effect. These venerable ones hold on to the idea that the conferring of the Bharat Ratna will demean these builders of our freedom. I solicit your response without reservations.

I, for one, feel that the very movement will generate public enthusiasm for the cause and inspire interest in these redoubtable revolutionaries, now lying in relative oblivion thanks to official unconcern and public preoccupation with the material imperatives of life.

The awarding of the Nobel Prize for Physics to Einstein did not lower his status by any stretch of imagination despite the fact that other awardees were nowhere near his level in terms of scientific attainment. Not all Nobel Peace Prizes have been well given but the likes of Mother Teresa, Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King (Jr.) have in receiving the prize rather raised its status instead of themselves having been lowered by its conferment.

Bagha Jatin, Rash Behari Bose and Masterda Surjya Sen stand preeminent in their revolutionary sacrificial glory which no decoration can do justice to. But the point is not that. Like the worship of God in the image does not do justice to His impersonal infinitude and the worshipper does the ritual act of seeking forgiveness for the same, yet, continues with his worship, for culture demands it as a social and psychological imperative that contributes to the maintenance of character in the polity, so also, the conferring of the Bharat Ratna individually to the three revolutionaries, despite being not the best way to remember them, perhaps, is, nonetheless, a national need at a time when sinister forces are plotting their eventual demise from public memory, and we seek their forgiveness for any unintended offence that may thus attend on them.

The award will bring a near-forgotten chapter of the freedom movement, one that played the most crucial role in liberating India from colonial fetters, back into the limelight and inspire a generation of young learners to take up its study and do research into the actual causes of our achieving freedom. Thus, the simple act of decorating the heroes will open up the Pandora's Box wherein lie buried the remains of our revolutionaries to rot away to oblivion. Must we allow it? No, we will not. And herein lies the significance of the motion we are crusading for.

Abhishek Sanyal It would have been much better if you had not written this language in the petition Sugata Babu. This petition should follow an inclusive approach rather than an antagonising and alienating approach. Any petition should have the approach of trying to include all sections of people with different and varied mentalities. To me that is the essence of democratic success. This petition may be a success or maybe a failure that does not matter but it is the noble intention and effort behind this petition which matters to me the most. I have always believed that it is not necessary to criticise another individual to establish the greatness of any person. That cannot be the essence of any ideology. If that becomes the essence of any ideology then to me that ideology has failed and has become a communal one. Many people have criticised this petition when I had approached them but many people have signed it too. Lets take the positives with us and carry on with our efforts. It is really not necessary to justify the cause of this petition. Let the people themselves understand it.Sugata Bose I have not criticised any. I have merely put forth the criticisms being levelled against the motion by many. Please keep your ideas about my intentions to yourself and stop misinterpreting me or giving us lectures. Your carping criticisms about this and that are not always warranted and I do not appreciate them at all, not that I say this to deter you from doing it but that I cannot bear this being on all boats at the same time. One must be honest to one's convictions and I am to mine. So be you to yours. God bless you! P.S.: You are requested to read thoroughly the post before formulating your fantastic ideas about it and my stated stance in your oblique reference. @ Abhishek SanyalSugata Bose No one has to oblige us by signing the Petition or getting signatures for it even as they reserve the right to keep on criticising our every move that is not in conformity with theirs. I, for one, cannot be a hypocrite to appease all quarters of the past political dispensation and will strongly adhere to Netaji-Bagha Jatin-Rash Behari Bose-Masterda-and the whole body of revolutionaries. I am not a Gandhian nor do I subscribe to his views, nor am I in any way a Nehruvian. The deeds that they have done to Netaji have permanently damaged the cause of India and with it lowered my estimation of them. Nonetheless, in the latest post update I have merely mentioned the types of criticisms that are being raised in many a quarter and I personally have not made any criticism as such. Therefore, I do not quite appreciate unwholesome remarks made about my supposed intention neither do I welcome so-called salutary suggestions being offered by professed but not practised liberals. I have been handling this petition, courtesy the blessings of some ardent devotees of the revolutionaries, and with their graces can carry on doing so. If no one will help me, I can help myself and the trinity for whom I do it will help me attain to whatever aspiration I have from this project that I have undertaken. To win a war one has to have a cool head. No army in the world won a war because of their emotions rather they won it with intelligent strategies.Sugata Bose Abhishek Sanyal, do not venture beyond civil bounds for I know how to handle impertinence. Your extraneous comments are not worth responding to and, henceforth, they will be meted the treatment they deserve. If you speak irrationally without substance to your assertions, you expose your debility as a person. Sugata Bose Abhishek Sanyal, not at all but people like you who overreach themselves must be shown their position. Sugata Bose Abhishek Sanyal, I do not seek from you all this advice and guidance. Go to the relevant group and keep commenting to your heart's content. Sugata Bose Abhishek Sanyal, I had asked you to keep commenting in the group so that others may also profit from your luminosity and may have the opportunity to respond. But you continue to engage me in extraneous matters, thinking overly high of yourself. If you have no other work worthwhile than to keep irritating me with these comments, you will be exposing your inner attributes in not too bright a light and I sincerely pray that you will not do so. Regarding others' comments and stances, I am not equipped or authorised to speak. Hence, it will be worthwhile of you to ask them who have thus set your mind wondering. God bless you!Samir Majumdar While l fully agree with and endorse the petition,l humbly suggest there are some others in different States worthy of the honour like Chapekar brothers in Pune.Sugata Bose I know, and we are working towards this wider objective of the resurrection of all these heroes of armed rebellion and revolution against the British from the depths of imposed oblivion. Thank you for mentioning the valiant trio of the Chapekar brothers.

SPIRITUAL AND MATERIAL TRANSFORMATION --- THE LEADER, THE IDEA, THE MASSES AND THE CHANGE (UNFINISHED)

Let leaders practice truthfulness and see what a wonderful change comes in our polity. To show them the way, be truthful yourselves, for often the leader needs to be led and the follower shows the way.

Character is on the decline in society in general and it is showing up so glaringly in the lives of the leaders who have quit morals, ethics, principles et al. If you wish to redress this pernicious state of things beyond the odd word of mock condemnation, stop hero-worshipping your leaders and intellectuals who have cast the country's interests to the winds and are busy in securing self-stability in the quicksands of earthly existence. But such a thing can never be and they will, despite their ardent assumptions and contrary claims to conscientiousness, be swept aside by the tide of times, for the masses are awakening and if the leaders do not mend their ways today, they will have no tomorrow, mark my words. There is a limit to human endurance and this mass desecration of the motherland by a handful of corporate magnates and corrupt politicians have had their day and must now make way for a brighter polity who in turn will cast them aside just as they have thus far cast aside the country's interests for self-gain.

But for this massive change to take place a mighty revolution of ideas is necessary, for the inertia of the past will not let go of its hold and the new age will not see its birth till the past perfidies are done away with. There must be a fresh onrush of ideas, a new interpretation of all that is sublime in our spiritual tradition, a dissociation from the current corruptions and a course-correction thereof, for mass support taken away form these mass leaders, they will be rendered sterile. It is here that work needs to be done, this orientation of the masses to higher ideas whereby they regain their individuality and assert their freedom from the servitude that afflicts them.

The idea is omnipotent. It wields its influence from subliminal levels to shape human destiny. No wonder that revolutions in the real world have ever been preceded by revolution in the world of ideas. The idea spelt out in effective terms and in the fullness of circumstance grips the consciousness of the masses and moves them to effect revolutionary change. The philosopher brews up the idea in the distillery of his mind and the leader picks it up to give it concrete shape and form. Then the masses fall in line to lend their labour for the transformation to be.

BHARAT RATNA FOR RASH BEHARI BOSE, MASTERDA SURYA SEN AND BAGHA JATIN

We do not need verbal encouragement in the form of comments on facebook timeline. We need concrete work, signatures, sharing of the Petition post, comments on the Petition page proper and propagation work for the project among acquaintances. Such dissemination of the idea will bear rich dividend and bolster the movement, for, after all, this is a people's programme and needs public support. This project is of epic significance as the coming days will gradually reveal. Please be an active participant in it and help bring it to fruition fast.

After watching the interview of Binod Bihari Chowdhury, participant in the Chittagong Armoury Raid, I hang my head in shame as a mere caricature of a patriot and I include many others with it, insincere souls who are today clamouring in the name of so-called nationalism.

The nation had been betrayed then by spies and informers and conformists to colonial control or agitators in halfhearted opposition to it but not by these valiant sons of Bengal who on 18 April, 1930 stormed the Chittagong Armoury and other control lines of the Raj to liberate the city for a week before the might of the Empire crushed their fledgling force to regain imperial control over the city. The British had been routed fair and square in the Battle of the Jalalabad Hills with 54 revolutionary musketeers repulsing 22000 Lewis sub-machine gun armed troops for an entire day till they beat retreat in defeat at dusk. The uneven battle was lost the following day and boys martyred for the motherland's freedom. Many escaped and fled the scene only to fight on a later day till all were either captured or killed and the leader, Masterda Surya Sen, was apprehended through betrayal of a relative hosting him at his house. Masterda was hanged on 12 January, 1930.

Most of the young boys who had participated in this epic battle of liberation died in the struggle but a few survived the rigours of the day to recount their tale witnessed at first hand. One such was Binod Bihari Chowdhury. He was not a good shot. His hands trembled as he pulled the trigger of the gun. He was, thus, not included in the front line of the Indian Republican Republican Army on the fateful day of 18 April, 1930 but was inducted in the operation subsequently owing to the incidence of unforeseen events. After the revolution was crushed, the boy Binod Bihari escaped to Kumira where he lived incognito. Thus began his protracted life as a fugitive.

The 97 soldiers of the Indian Republican Army had been divided into five contingents, each with a specific mission. They had to respectively gain control of the Pahartali Auxiliary Force Armoury, the Dampara Police Armoury, the Telephone and Telegraph Centre, attack the Pahartali European Club and uproot the rail-track at the Laksam Junction so as to disconnect Chittagong from the rest of Bengal.

After watching the interview of Binod Bihari Chowdhury, participant in the Chittagong Armoury Raid, I hang my head in shame as a mere caricature of a patriot and all others with it who are today clamouring in the name of so-called nationalism. The austere simplicity, the spirit of sacrifice, courage of conviction and strength of character along with deep reserves of feeling for the motherland that are easily evident in this centenarian revolutionary even through the medium of celluloid makes me wonder what material these men were made of who dared the British eye to eye and ousted them from Chittagong for that fateful week dated 18-25 April, 1930.
