VANDE MATARAM ... 10
VANDE MATARAM ... 10
The intellectual life of India must be saved. Liberty must be pursued on all fronts and especially in the realm of thought. Freedom of thinking and expression is being curtailed these days and we must resist such oppressive measures in the name of nationalism. The judiciary must stand free to dispense with justice and safeguard the rights of citizens.
A constricted civic life can scarce ensure civilisational growth. Hence, the individual must be protected from the party's predatory manoeuvres and his voice allowed free utterance in the public domain for democracy to subsist in right earnest.
Regressive nationalism is dangerous for the polity and needs to be checked by enlightened civic participation in the in the domain of democratic discourse. This can only be ensured by intellectuals uniting in giving utterance to their views irrespective of authoritarian resistance to such free expression.
The press and the electronic media have declined in recent years to becoming passive supporters of the government or active sycophants benefiting from popular subscription to their views. This has spelled the doom of not only democratic opposition to the government in more robust terms by quickening contrary public opinion but has dealt intellectual life the deathblow.
How can a country so steeped in reactionary politics, so mired in acquisitive industry, so deluded by regressive religious revivalism be expected to progress? It is time to make amendments to our mental attitudes, clarifications in our understanding of the nation's history in real dialectical terms and not in propagated nonsensical terms that harp on the same lines characteristic of the ignoramus, and to initiate individual enterprises in illumining the polity as to what is truly good for it. For the successful prosecution of such an enterprise, individuals must enlighten themselves about the nation's history and the dialectics of history itself so that they may guide their countrymen along the right channels of national fulfilment. May men with character, courage of conviction and correctness in comprehension of the historical necessities of the times step in to step up the process of the emancipation of the masses from their material misery !

VANDE MATARAM ... 9
VANDE MATARAM ... 9
Brutality of man against man continues under the cover of nationalism. Nationalism requires humanity for its basis. Whither humanity? Where is justice, fairplay? Is power thus to be corrupted? Is power so corrupting? Are men at the helm of affairs so corrupt, so power-drunk? Is this the independence we have won? Is this Indian civilisation? Are words enough to bolster Indian hopes, to preserve Indian culture? Did not Swamiji lay down character as the basis of all worthwhile nation-building action in whose absence action becomes engagement in self-serving? Whither character among the leaders, the politicians, the ministers, the legislators and the keepers of the law? How can nationalism survive in its absence? How can patriotism be anything better than so much of a parody of it while the masses suffer a despicable life, fit only for the lower animals, perhaps?
Our freedom was soft-lost but hard-gained. We were cheated into submission. Our own men by the millions had betrayed us and, having sold our freedom, helped the British maintain their stranglehold on us. That octopus-hold our boys, our girls, our men and women by the millions had to unlock and force the beast home whence it had come from its island habitat across the seas. The depredation of India by the British to the tune of forty-five trillion US dollars in two centuries of colonisation, the inflicting of periodic famine which cost approximately twenty million Indian lives in the same period, the abuse of our dignity, the inhuman torture of anybody who resisted British rule, the use of Indians to kill, torture and rule Indians by brutal force, all these had to be overcome by the blood if our martyrs to freedom. Was it to see this day when our own men turn against our own men using power invested in them by a believing polity? This is the death of democracy but is, perhaps, the way it ought to go, considering the fact that our freedom was won by the bourgeoisie and, so, necessarily, it must gradually slide into the hands of regressive bourgeois forces whose repressive organ is the government of popular mandate.
The question arises -- whither now?

THE WAY WE REACT
THE WAY WE REACT
Our attitudes are formed so often by our state of health, by our vigour of constitution or absence of it, by our lifestyle, our daily discipline or its utter absence, by the data input that bombard our brain and fashion our responses to the pressing issues that confront us, by our environment and our heritage, our genetic make-up and stored-up past tendencies stemming from previous births. All these are contributory factors, but often a magnetic personality comes our way and with his undeniable charisma sweeps us into his thought-field where we absorb and assimilate ideas that quicken us into an altered response to the challenges of the times. It is then that movements begin and we are caught in its maelstrom. These complex interactions constantly feed into us and fashion our beings and draw out of us our executive output in the form of a stream of responses which we call life. Are we truly free then to determine the course of our lives? Never quite, for life itself is a web of interactions between related beings who form the lattice of the social structure.

POESY : TIME, THOU FRIEND AND FOE IN THE ALTERNATE PHASES OF LIFE
POESY : TIME, THOU FRIEND AND FOE IN THE ALTERNATE PHASES OF LIFE
At the beginning of life
Time is our greatest friend.
Towards the end
Time turns enemy.
Those that have discharged their duties well,
Who have thrown off the shackles of life thus,
They are ready for the Grand Departure.
For them the boat is waiting.
Those who idled away the allotted time
Pursuing pleasure and its sister pain,
They are caught off-guard in time
And are doomed to damming death.
They find no boat waiting for them
But must drown in the salt-sea of delusion.
To unknown terrain they perforce must travel,
Perchance fraught with fear.
Oblivion is their lot, is it?
Not so. For Nature is merciful
And recycles life here on earth.
They must visit, revisit the place
And carry on with their unfinished task,
The grand mission of self-fulfilment,
'Operation, liberation of the soul'.
A third way is open as well,
To live brave and to die brave,
Working for a mission.
Some worthwhile work,
Some selfless service
That caters to the common weal,
Some such labour of love as well
Can deal death the deathblow.

THE DEATH OF SWAMIJI AT OUR HANDS
THE DEATH OF SWAMIJI AT OUR HANDS
Swamiji died on 4th July, 1902. He has lived on, nonetheless, in fiery terms in the virile veins of the revolutionaries. Now, though, we are witnessing a terrible watering down of his ideas and ideals for humam emancipation in all its catholic comprehensiveness. This, indeed, is the true demise of Swamiji. His ideals are being destroyed by presenting him in an effeminate manner, a tendency among his countrymen which he so detested. Soft music and sentimental stuff doing the rounds in his name was exactly what he had fulminated against but that is just the tribute devotees keep paying him, lip-service of a kind that is so antithetical to what the 'cyclonic monk' had ever aspired for from his countrymen. Even men who have renounced in his name and have joined the Order founded by him resort to entertaining the people with soft, sentimental music when the country, nay the whole world, needs a fiery spread of his message in virile terms. This has been the real death of Swamiji and not what he voluntarily took upon himself on 4 July, 1902.
We want the resurrection of Swamiji now, now that we have killed him, a feat which neither he nor his God could perform. It is feat, indeed, and the damned fate of our country that, we, the effeminates of this nation, have declared ourselves to be the imbeciles who were born to kill the greatest man of our country, the grandest soul of the Age in this despicable fashion which, sure enough, the seer in Swamiji must have foreseen when in desolation and despair he gave up his body 'like a disused garment' hours after the vesper service of his Master on the fourth day of the month of July one hundred and nineteen years from this day.

VANDE MATARAM ... 8
VANDE MATARAM ... 8
We have suffered not just a few centuries of European colonial occupation with its Christianising corollary but several more centuries of Islamic occupation with its equally nefarious Islamic invasion of our society and culture. Both these Semitic influences have enormously harmed India and it is a tribute to the Hindu genius that we have triumphed in preserving much of our age-old spiritual culture despite incurring massive territorial and civilisational losses. The harmony that the Sanatan Dharma made possible even out of these antithetical religious elements that were bent on the destruction of the Mother Faith is proof of the catholicity of Hinduism and its grand power of assimilation.
We are taught that we had lost our freedom in 1757 at the hands of the British but nothing can be farther from the truth. We lost it when Sindh fell to Arab conquest in 712 C.E. Muhammad Bin Qasim dealt India a deathblow from which she is yet to recover. Today's Pakistan bears testimony to what we lost that day and Bangladesh has been added to it to boot. God bless Indian ignorance about India's history ! Vande Mataram !
