When Muslims convert Hindus to Islam, they rejoice, and when a single Muslim girl dons the vermilion and the mangalsutra to mark her marital status to a Hindu, they issue a fatwa to remind her of her religious duties.
What sort of a democracy do we live in where Muslim clerics dare denounce a Parliamentarian's individual actions, and her own party, the Trinamool Congress, and its 'righteous' leader, meekly submit to such an affront by not counter-denouncing the declaration of the Deobandi fatwa? Imagine the ruckus they would have raised if it were some Hindu organisation that had dared such a similar affront ! Exhibition of righteous anger suits her only against the 'Jai Shree Ram' sloganeering cadres of the BJP but not against the Muslim clerics who dare attempt impositions in the camouflaged form of the issuing of Islamic legal guidelines in the form of the fatwa.
The inability of the TMC supremo to openly stand by her own Party's Parliamentarian at a time of unseemly assault on her right to self-determination is a glaring illustration of the slanted stance of 'secular' politics being done in our beleaguered State of West Bengal. If this is not pointer enough to vote-bank minority appeasement, what is? If this is not selective practice of 'righteousness', what is?
Nusrat Jahan Ruhi Jain has thus far made the country proud by her bold affirmation of her Hindu-Muslim identity and has become a torch-bearer for millions of others to follow in her footsteps. Her actions, today, if sincerely adhered to in the future as well, could well be the beacon for all Muslims as they struggle to grapple with and overcome clerical ideological oppression. May Nusrat Jahan Ruhi Jain be inspired further to further the cause of human freedom from religious tyranny !
