Nusrat Jahan's marriage to a Jain, that is, a non-Muslim, will lead her to hell and to destruction, says Muslim cleric Ilyas Sharafuddin. He justifies his statement on the basis of Islamic scriptural injunction on the marriage of Muslims. The scriptures cited by him are the Quran and the Hadees (Hadith) which, according to him, impose such marital restrictions on Muslims.

Now here is a clear statement from the Islamic holy books and moderate Muslims are tongue-tied in the matter of denunciation of such impositions for they also have to subscribe to such scriptural injunctions if they choose to remain within their faith in all sincerity. All that they can do is to bypass the main issue raised by the hardliners as to the real restrictions imposed by the Islamic scriptures, and keep harping on the Constitutional directives and democratic norms of the Union of India. They will never raise the central issues of Islam regarding marriage which the clerics are highlighting and, thus, in the bargain they will in effect give in to the status quo on the matter which will keep Muslims in a backward state owing to slowness of social evolution.

And, yet, the Muslim society, catching the winds of change in a fast evolving modern world, will change, too, and gradually align itself with the rest of humanity. Where then lies the future for such impositions which more and more women at no distant date will flout as they assert their individual freedom in the teeth of severe opposition from their community, for the free flow of the soul is impossible to contain by pious prescriptions or absolutist injunctions of sacrosanct scriptures?

It seems the clerics, despite their vociferousness, are on the losing side as the modern progressive outlook casts aside anything that stands in the way of individual freedom. The sooner masses of women like Nusrat Jahan come to the fore to resist, rebel and reject these restrictive values of medieval times that have lost their utility --- if ever there was one --- and validity, the better for the polity here and across the world. Muslim women, restricted and repressed thus far, will lead the ensuing revolution of ideas and action, and usher in a new age for the entire Muslim community worldwide. The Islamic clerics will have soon met their match as more and more Nusrat Jahans triumphantly become Nusrat Jahan Ruhi Jains.
